5 B - Spring 2018
Welcome to 5B's class page. 5B consists of 21 children who all love to: laugh, play, share and learn new skills together. We have recently been focusing on the school value of resilience, highlighting the need to strive forwards and overcome barriers. Children are extremely well supported within the classroom by our teaching assistants Mrs Dixon, Mrs Preston, and Miss Head. The class enjoy working together collaboratively and solving problems. We are inquisitive in our nature and determined to reach our full potential.
Literacy – This term the children are focusing on Myths and Legends. The topic will help us to understand the features of Myths and Legends, before looking at various myths from around the world, thinking about the characters, settings and morals. Children will then have the opportunity to build their creative writing skills by developing their own mythical characters and stories. Parents can help the children at home by discussing this work and asking children to tell them about their favourite Myth
Maths – The children have made good progress and thrive on the rigorous, systematic and structured approach of Big Maths. This term children will be looking at solving multiplication and division questions in column methods and applying this to solve word problems. We will also be covering; time, measure and fractions as we continue to build up our outer numeracy knowledge. Children will be given regular homework around these topics, however any additional help and practice at home will ensure that children maximise their knowledge.
Topic – Our topic this term is 'Ancient Greece'. The children have already started to build up this knowledge and have shown a keen interest in the classroom display. We will investigate the life of the Ancient Greeks and the role that they played in developing modern society. This will include learning about; gods and goddesses, the Ancient Greek hierarchy, the Olympics, Greek settlements and the Mediterranean diet. children will be encouraged to do their own research at home to extend their knowledge and parents are encouraged to help with this.
Geography Day - This will take place on Thursday January 18th. Each class has been given a European country and we will be focusing on Italy. Children will discover the contrasting areas of Italy, with its snow covered mountains in the North and Mediterranean climate to the South, as well as the volcanic geography and history of the country. We will also take a look at Italian culture through the nations art, food, language and sport.
Science – This term the children have been focusing on the topic of forces. The topic is very practical and children will uncover the effect of gravity, water resistance, air resistance and magnetism through various experiments and reflections. Children enjoy asking questions in Science and testing various theories. We encourage parents to ask children about their work in science and make links to the real world whenever possible
PE - PE this term will be on Wednesday morning and Friday afternoon, with a focus on developing technical and tactical skills in a variety of games. On Wednesday, the children will work with Barrow AFC community sports and on Friday, Cumbria Cricket. The external instructors provide a wealth of experience and aim to encourage a fun and energetic approach to physical activity. Please encourage children to remember their PE kits and remove any jewellery.
