5/6 W Autumn Term 2017
'The best way to predict your future is to create it.'
Welcome to 5/6 W's class page. 5/6 W is a mixed class of Year 5 and Year 6 pupils, the class consists of 23 pupils altogether; 13 Year 6 pupils and 10 year 5 pupils. In 5/6 W we like to make sure each learning experience is creative, engaging and relevant to the pupils needs. This academic year will be focused on preparing year 5 pupils to move onto year 6 by allowing them to develop and progress both socially and academically as a group. Year 6 pupils will also be learning new strands from the curriculum whilst also being prepared for the end of year Sats.
Literacy – This term the children will be working on suspense writing. We will be using a variety of books and videos to help engage the children in their learning and we have even organised an early trip away to Muncaster Castle for a 'spooky' day out to help generate some ideas for the children to use within their work this term. We encourage the children to read at home every night and have their journals signed as much as possible, any support with this would be greatly appreciated.
Maths - At Cambridge we use Big Maths, this allows each child to have a personalised learning experience within this subject, this allows each child to progress and develop areas within this subject. This Term will focused on Operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication & division). Both year 5 & 6 pupils will be learning new strands from the curriculum this year in an enjoyable, practical and creative way. Children should practice their times tables each night at home as a strong understanding of these is vital to help maintain progress within this subject, any help with this would be greatly appreciated.
Topic – Our topic this term is 'Extreme Earth'. This is a fascinating topic looking into Earth itself and natural disasters. The children will be investigating; hurricanes, tornadoes, tsunamis, flash floods, earthquakes and volcanoes. They will be investigating why these natural disasters occur and the disaster which they cause. We like to encourage children to complete research outside of school hours where possible as this helps secure learning from school whilst also developing their independence and ownership of their own learning.
Science – The children are looking at both the respiratory and cardiovascular system this term. The children will be taking part in practical activities to help understand how these systems work and how they are affected through lifestyle, diet, exercise and much more. The children will have chance to plan and research a physical activity of their choice within small groups. I would encourage children to research these systems outside of school hours where possible, any help on this would be greatly appreciated.
Computing – This term 5/6 W will continue to develop their coding skills using Espresso coding in ICT. The children are challenged to discuss and decode apps and games. The children have the opportunity at the end of each session to create their own code and apply it within an app or personally made game.
PE - This term children will be swimming on a Tuesday morning, please can all children have their swimming kit ready and available for this day. The children will also be taking part in P.E on a Wednesday morning, once again, please could children have a P.E kit ready and available for this day. Please make sure that all pupils can remove their own jewellery (earrings).
These websites will be very helpful in the run up to SATs. They are full of quizzes, games and activites to help the children prepare!
