SATs Week: 8th May - 11th May London Residential: 7th June - 9th June
6P consists of 27 pupils. We are an ambitious, creative and considerate class who take pride in the wonderful work we produce. The pupils in 6P behave as role-models and have special jobs and responsibilities around the school.
Spring Term 2017
English–This term the children will be reading 'Friend or Foe' by Michael Morpurgo'; this book is set during World War 2 and shows how two evacuee children are torn between secrecy and honesty. We will be visiting the Dock Museum and will be welcoming visitors from the Barrow Archives and British Army to inspire our writing and spark creative ideas. 6P will be focusing on using powerful and sophisticated vocabulary in English and will be thinking about how a text can make a reader feel.
Reading - We encourage the children to read at home and have their journals signed as much as possible, any support with this would be greatly appreciated. Luckily for 6P, we are also a part of Cumbria County Council's Spellbinding Reading Challenge this term. We are loving the new books and have been writing our book reviews on the website :http://spellbinding.cleo.net.uk/
Maths – 6P will continue to work on Big Maths and there will be a large focus on reasoning and applying maths knowledge to written questions - in preparation for the SATs tests in May. The children have made made great progress in number and we are moving onto more complex arithmetic such as multiplying fractions and dividing by two digits.
Topic – Our topic this term is 'Conflict'. We have looked at how conflict has occurred in the past and is still present in the modern world. The children have researched previous events and discussed within their philosophy for children lessons the impact of these events and how they changed the world. This topic links very well with English and recent visits - making the school work cross curricular and allows the children to see the links and discuss this important topic daily.
Science – The children will be moving onto their 'Animals and Evolution' topic, where they will study changes in environments and habitats, and how this has affected animals globally. 6P will be taking part in practical investigations and will be looking into extinction and risks for endangered species.
PE - PE this term will be on a Tuesday morning and a Wednesday afternoon (with Barrow AFC Community Sports). Please try to remind children to bring their P.E kit on these days and make sure that all pupils can remove their own jewellery (earrings).
Outdoor Learning - 6P try to use the outdoor space for learning as much as possible and we are glad the weather is starting to become a little brighter! As part of our topic 'Conflict' - Y4/5/6 will be designing and creating their very own army assault courses for an outdoor afternoon. Pupils will also be taking part in their class gardening afternoon on Tuesday 14th March - they will need wellies and outdoor clothing.
These websites will be very helpful in the run up to SATs. They are full of quizzes, games and activites to help the children prepare!
