History
At Cambridge we aim to link our history topics closely with other subjects, especially Literacy. Our topics aim to help our children to gain a coherent knowledge and understanding of Britain’s past and that of the wider world.
We aim to inspire children’s curiosity about different times and events in the past and how these events have changed the lives of our ancestors.
Our topics include:
- Famous People
- The Great Fire of London
- The Egyptians
- Roman Britain
- The Vikings and Anglo Saxons
- The changes in early Britain from the Stone Age
- Furness Abbey
- Life in Barrow-in-Furness
- Mayan civilisation
To supplement the children’s learning we often try to include external visits. Recent visits have included The Jorvik centre in York, Hadrian’s Wall in Carlisle, Furness Abbey, The Dock Museum, The Manchester Museum, Hill Top House, The local fire station and our own locality.
From Year 2 through to year 6, children are often asked to complete projects based on the history topics. Year 2 recently handed in some fantastic projects based on a famous person of their choice. Some of the famous people included Neil Armstrong, Beatrix Potter, George Stephenson, Queen Elizabeth II and King Henry VIII.
We also like to welcome visitors into our school to bring history to ‘life’. We have worked with age concern and members of the local community and really enjoyed listening to them reminiscing about their lives during World War Two.
We also plan special events to remember important events in history.
In November the whole school spent a day commemorating the end of World War One with the rest of the nation by planning activities throughout the day. Each class made poppies using different art mediums, such as clay, wire, collage, paint and pastels. The poppies were used to make a striking display in school.
