We are a class of 30children and like to be busy. We are lucky to have the Time Garden just outside our classroom and some lovely play areas.

Phonics & Spellings

We have Phonics lessons for 20 minutes each day where we learn new sounds and practice reading these sounds in words and sentences. In our Phonics lessons we also learn how to spell words which contain our new sounds and our high frequency words.

Spellings are sent home as homework each week and are taken from the sounds we have been learning during the week and the words we need more practice to spell correctly. Children also have logins for Spelling Shed which they can use in the class and at home.

English

Our English work is usually based around a book. We learn traditional stories, read stories from other cultures, write lists, letters, diaries, instructions and learn poetry. Children are always encouraged to talk about what they are going to write – if they can’t say it, they can’t write it!

We listen to children read at least once per week, often much more, and children are encouraged to read at home as much as possible.

Maths

We follow Big Maths and children look forward to the end of week Big Maths tests where they try to beat their score. Big Maths lessons take place daily for 20 minutes as a starter to a Maths lesson. The children learn to count forward and backward to 100 and beyond; count in 2s, 5s and 10s; learn instant recall of number facts and how to count on or back from different numbers.

Children also have logins for TTRockstars to practice their times tables and regularly take part in school competitions.

Science

Mrs Birrell takes our class for Science and we learn about our bodies (senses, keeping healthy, labelling parts of the body), materials, plants and animals.
