Year 3

Hello and Welcome to 3S

Thank you for taking the time to stop and read our page. 3S are a bright and lively class of 31. They are taught by Mr Sharkey with support throughout the week from Mrs Brown, Miss Quinn, Miss Head and Miss Stafford.

English

In English so far this year we have explored lots of lovely stories including ‘The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane’, ‘Charlotte’s Web’ and ‘Varjak Paw’. The children use these magical stories to create; character descriptions, diary excerpts, letters and creative story writing. They also learn through drama and role play. Children are encouraged to read at home as often as possible to their grown up. We have a reading raffle and a buddy system to help encourage lots of reading.

Maths

Cambridge Primary School follows the Big Maths programme. This scheme helps teachers closely monitor children’s learning and development in Maths. As the Big Maths programme is so uniquely tailored to each child’s needs, the children are working on different challenges and methods within each lesson and are making fantastic progress. Children complete CLIC and SAFE tests every week to help plan their learning and assess their progress.

Science and the wider curriculum

We have looked at the importance of our skeletons, joints and muscles as well as the importance of a healthy balanced diet and how we release energy from what we eat. We have linked this to our topic on’ A Taste of Cumbria’ with a fantastic visit to a local farm where we got to watch lambs being born and to really consider where our food comes from.

Our topic is different every term and covers all areas of the curriculum: Geography, History, Art, DT, Music and Computers. The children also started learning French this year and it was a very popular lesson! We hope to be able to do much more. Our different and exciting topics mean we have lots of opportunities for outdoor learning and exploration of our local area.

3S take part in a range of sports activities including Yoga and swimming. We are all hoping to get back to school before the end of the summer term as we still have lots to learn about - The Romans, Forces and Magnets as well as reading The Iron Man and The BFG!

Thank you for supporting the children with their reading, TT Rockstars and Spelling Shed.  Remember to follow us on the school Twitter and Facebook pages.

Thank you

Mr Sharkey
